mpass plans to use NFC for POS payment

mpass is a payment service of German“s mobile network operator vodafone, O2 and T-Mobile. The three operators team up in order to enable customers for mobile payment. Mpass was already launched in 2008 (announced at the MCTA in Berlin) but didn“t shake a leg. To use the service, customers simply need a SIM card of the MNOs mentioned above as well as a bank account or a prepaid contract. Customers can pay currently at online stores with a casino online PIN/TAN system. The Mpass GmbH was founded in 2008 but actually didn’t shake a leg so far.

In beginning 2012 this might change. At least the MNOs plan to change something according to a report in the Handelsblatt. In Q1/2012 the MNO will start to rollout NFC stickets which allow customers to used their mobile phone for NFC payment transactions at an appropriate POS system. The plan is to cooperate with fast food chains, coffee shops and kiosks to use the mobile phone for micro payment.
